2015-2016 STATE PROJECT - "Rock the Fort!"

2015-2016 State President Abby Garnett’s Project raised funds to have a stone sign erected in front of the new Fort Hawkins Visitor Center to promote and advertise the entrance to the fort. The sign will have a stone, or rock, base like the fort, so the 2015-2016 GSSCAR State theme is Rock the Fort!
Abby's project raised awareness of Fort Hawkins as a valuable historic site in middle Georgia. Her vision is for the members of the Georgia State Society Children of the American Revolution, family, friends, and the public to become educated about this wonderful landmark.
In the early 1800s, Fort Benjamin Hawkins was constructed for military purposes by the United States government under President Thomas Jefferson. A trading settlement, which grew to be the city of Macon, Georgia, developed because of the fort’s location. In fact, those very settlers used the fort for protection during the War of 1812. The Fort Hawkins Archaeological Site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
